How to compare a fuel price properly

Pence per litre, fill-up cost and report time: the details to check when comparing local fuel prices.

Fuel prices are quoted in pence per litre. The figure is useful for comparing the same fuel grade, but it helps to know what the difference means for the amount you plan to buy.

Number one: pence per litre

Compare like with like. A 2p difference per litre may sound small, but it adds up across a fill-up.

Number two: fill-up cost

Multiply the price in pence per litre by the litres you expect to buy and divide by 100. A 2p difference on 55 litres changes the cost by £1.10.

Number three: report time

Fuel prices are reported when they change, so an older timestamp does not always mean the price is wrong. Check the last reported time and confirm the pump price when you arrive.
